What is AR?

Students at Kamala participate in a school-wide reading program called Accelerated Reader (AR).  AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor each child's independent reading practice. Students read books (from the library, myON,   Storia, etc.) at their own individual reading levels and take comprehension quizzes to check their understanding on their iPad.  The quiz results give the students and teachers the feedback they need in order to set reading goals and direct ongoing reading practice; the school-wide goal for these comprehension quizzes is 80%.

AR differentiates by reading levels using the ZPD (zone of proximal development) - the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration.  After students' reading levels are determined, Kamala students can choose their own reading material (from the library, e-books, etc.).  To assist with this process, students can visit www.arbookfind.com, which will show students interesting books within their reading range.  As a result of being able to choose books that are interesting to them, students become more motivated to read and have more fun doing so.

Parents can support student use of AR by:

  • Read with/ to your child.
  • Encourage your student to read at least 20 minutes a day.
  • Ask your child questions about what he or she is reading.
  • Visit the school or public library.
